How to make your resume ATS-friendly
Many companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to collect and sort resumes. It does not “reject” you by magic, but if it cannot read your resume, a recruiter may never see it.
What an ATS actually does
An ATS reads your file, pulls out text such as your name, jobs, education and skills, and stores it so recruiters can search and filter. If the text is hidden in images, tables or columns, the system can mix it up or miss it.
Formatting that works
Keep the design simple. Good design does not need complicated layout.
- Use one column and standard headings such as Experience, Education and Skills.
- Use common fonts and normal bullet characters.
- Put contact details in the body of the page, not in the header or footer.
- Save as PDF with selectable text, or Word if the post asks for it.
- Avoid text boxes, icons for contact details, skill bars and photos.
Use the words in the job post
Recruiters often search by skill names. If the post says “Power BI” and you wrote “business dashboards”, add the exact tool name where it is true. Also write both the full form and the short form once, such as “search engine optimisation (SEO)”.
Do not stuff keywords
Repeating keywords or hiding white text does not help. Recruiters see it, and many systems flag it. Use a skill only if you can talk about it in an interview.
Test before you apply
Paste your resume and the job description into a free ATS checker. It shows which skills match, which are missing and whether your structure is easy to read. Treat the score as a guide, not a verdict.
